Feature Project (Modelling)

Client:   Taupo District Council
Location:   Taupo, NZ

Taupo Disctrict Council called on AWT to complete the development, calibration and analysis of a complete system model of the Taupo Sewerage Network.

The model contained 3373 manholes, 3365 pipes, 17 pump stations with 31 pumps and 30 offline storage tanks, 4 inverted siphons and 2599 catchments. It was calibrated with a very high level of confidence for wet and dry weather flows using 17 flow gauges deployed by AWT.

System performance was undertaken for a number of development scenarios with a range of rainfall events. For each system performance scenario several upgrade options were analysed and costed.
Out with this the Taupo District Council were able to determine the level of service to be provided and allowed them to defensively set development impact fees to be levied for future subdivisions. It also provided hydraulic design, cost and timing for all system capacity upgrades required over the 20 year design horizon used for the project.

“Having the ability to test a number of what-if scenarios after the completion of the project provides valuable insight into the impact of additional subdivisions.”

Taupo District Council now know with confidence what it takes to service the Taupo Sewerage Network and what the impact of urban growth will be.
